 Signs of pancreatitis include vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal discomfort. This potentially life-threatening condition is casued by inflammation of the pancreas (one of the digestive organs). Diagnosis is made by a combination of physical exam findings, bloodwork, and history (having a high fat meal, such as ham or turkey scraps, or getting into the garbage are common triggers). Treatment invloves hospitalization with intravenous fluids and antibiotics, pain medication, and withholding food and water for several days to allow the inflammation to calm down. Resist the temptation to share your rich holiday food with your pets. They will be much healthier if restricted to their regular food and treats.
