Nutrition:  For most surgical procedures that involve general anesthetics, your pet will most likely be requested to fast the night before and morning of surgery.  Make sure to follow the instructions on feeding before surgery.  It can be dangerous to anesthetize a pet with food in the stomach due to the risk of vomiting and having stomach contents get into the airway.  Anesthesia can cause nausea and loss of appetite post-operatively in many pets.  Surgeries of the abdominal cavity such as spays, bladder surgery, and intestinal surgery will often cause some degree of nausea and loss of appetite.

Getting your pet to eat after surgery is vital to proper recovery.  The healing process takes a large amount of energy.  Because of the possibility of upset stomach after anesthesia and surgery, it is best to offer small amounts of a bland diet frequently after your pet gets home.  If your pet refuses to eat after 48 hours, please contact us.  This is especially true in cats because of a disease called hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver.  Hepatic lipidosis occurs when a cat doesn't eat for a prolonged period and the body releases too much fat into the blood stream in an attempt to provide needed energy.  Fat is abnormally deposited in the liver and the cat can become gravely ill.
