Electrocardiography (EKG) and Blood Pressure

The doctors at the Animal Hospital of Waynesboro have multipe tools for evaluating your pet's heart.  Physical examination and auscultation, or listening with a stethescope, are important for detecting murmurs and arrythmias.   An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rythm.  Because there are multiple types of arrythmias and multiple causes, it is crucial to evaluate these further.

EKG's measure the electrical activity of the heart and give important information about what type of arrythmia is present.  The Animal Hospital of Waynesboro performs EKG's in-hospital.  We also have the capability of having a Board Certified specialist consult on the results to give us the best course of treatment.

Dogs and cats can suffer from high blood pressure just like their owners.  Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is dangerous in pets and can cause blindness, progressive heart disease and kidney disease.  Because hypertension can be caused by heart disease, kidney disease and thyroid disease, it is important to get a blood pressure check if your pet suffers from any of these conditions.
