Proper cleaning of the teeth requires general anesthesia. Although anesthesia has inherent risks, steps can be taken to minimize these risks. At the Animal Hospital of Waynesboro, we perform a complete physical examination on all pets prior to dental anesthesia. We routinely perform bloodwork to screen for organ disease prior to procedures. Anesthetic monitoring and dental cleaning are performed by licensed veterinary technicians. The technician monitors your pet's anesthesia, heart rate and respiratory rate. While under anesthesia, the pet is monitored using a device such as a doppler blood pressure monitor. The Animal Hospital of Waynesboro uses modern and safe anesthetics for our dental procedures. In many cases, intravenous fluids are given to support the pet's blood pressure and kidney function while under anesthesia. It is important to keep in mind that the health of the pet is at risk by not properly treating the dental disease.
During the dental procedure, scaling removes tartar above and below the gums either with hand instruments or ultrasonic equipment. The teeth and gums are carefully probed for any pockets, fractures, cavities or other problems. The teeth are then polished to smooth the surface and reduce new plaque accumulation. Dental radiographs (x-rays) may be taken to determine the health of the tooth root, pulp and tissue under the gumline. Any loose, infected or damaged teeth are extracted if necessary. Pain medicine including local anesthetic blocks are given to keep your pet comfortable after tooth extraction.
Professional cleaning should be done routinely as needed for your pet. Some animals may require yearly cleaning while others may be able to go for much longer between procedures.
